Adapting To Your New Kitchen With Granite Countertops

Posted on

Granite counters tend to cost more than other countertop options, but they're well worth the price. Not only are they gorgeous, but living with granite counters is, in many ways, easier than living with cheaper laminate counters. Your first few weeks living with granite counters in your kitchen are going to feel so exciting and liberating. Here are some things you'll have to get used to — in a good way!

You can put hot pans on the counter.

With so many other types of countertops, you have to put a potholder down before you put a hot pan on the counter. Otherwise, you'll melt the counter or leave a mark. This is not true of granite. It's a really durable stone, and it can take the heat. The sealers used to finish the granite are also chosen to ensure they are heat-proof. You can take a pan out of the oven and set it straight on the countertop. You can also take a pot off the stove and place it on the counter. This will save you a lot of time and worry. Don't be surprised, though, if it takes you a few weeks to break the habit of always trying to put a pan on the potholder.

Spills won't stain.

Even some of the more expensive, high-end quartz counters are prone to staining and discoloration if you spill on them. So you might be used to rushing to wipe things up as soon as you spill. With granite, though, you can take a deep breath and take your time. When properly sealed — which your new granite should be — granite counters are nearly non-porous and won't absorb staining materials. If that soy sauce or wine sits for a few minutes before you get to wiping it up, you don't have to worry.

You can cut on it.

Now, cutting on granite counters is not very good for your knives, so you probably don't want to do it on a regular basis. However, doing so won't scratch your granite. So if you have some cheap knives you don't mind ruining, you can absolutely cut the occasional apple or slice a quick piece of bread without having to pull out the cutting board. This can save you a lot of time when preparing quick meals and snacks.

Granite counters are simply amazing. Within a month or two, you will be used to having them, and you'll wonder how you ever lived without them. Reach out to a professional to discuss getting a granite countertop.
